A Spark of Hope East of the River

Brenna Taylor’s death and George Floyd’s public execution were one of the darkest moments during the pandemic. Covid-19 had most people stuck indoors and separate from one another. These tragic events manage to bring people together. I just came back from photographing my high school’s graduation parade. When I got home, my mother called me with a tone of excitement. She told me how she saw cars lined up from the East of the River parking lot to 40th ST NE DC with signs plastered everywhere. I immediately grabbed my camera and went outside to see what was going on. I met my mother on the corner of 40th and Dix Street. We explored the phenomenon together. It was evident that these people from varies ages and color came out to vocalize their outrage. I wanted to capture this moment of hope in a time where darkness shrouded social media. These photos were also feature in a virtual exhibit for the visual art teachers at my school. Solidarity is a powerful tool for change. Let us not forget that.
